Constance Baaten

Post doc

Dr. Constance Baaten is a postdoctoral researcher in the thrombosis and hemostasis field. She obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Molecular Life Sciences at Maastricht University. Subsequently, she started her PhD research at the department of Biochemistry at CARIM under the supervision of Prof. Johan Heemskerk and Dr. Paola van der Meijden, focusing on the acquired impairment and recovery of platelet function. Upon obtaining her PhD degree in 2018, Constance joined the group of Dr. Heidi Noels at the Institute for Molecular Cardiovascular Research (IMCAR) at the University Hospital Aachen with an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship for postdoctoral researchers. With this fellowship she was able to investigate platelet function in the context of chronic kidney disease. In 2020, she was awarded the prestigious Dekker grant for postdoctoral researchers by the Dutch Heart Foundation that allowed her to join the group of Prof. Hugo ten Cate at the department of Biochemistry to study platelet-platelet interactions while maintaining her postdoc position at the IMCAR institute.

Currently, Constance works as a researcher within the group of Prof. Henri Spronk at the Department of Biochemistry at CARIM and the group of Dr. Heidi Noels within the IMCAR institute. She continues to investigate platelet function in different pathophysiological conditions and is involved in the recently initiated study on thrombo-inflammation in post-COVID. Over the years, she has gained expertise in studying interactions between vascular cells (endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells), immune cells (neutrophils, monocytes) and platelets.
