Paul-Lennard Mendez

Post doc

Paul completed his Master of Science in medical biotechnology at the Technische Universität Berlin in September 2019. He received a scholarship from the International Max-Planck Research School for Biology and Computation (IMPRS-BAC) and joined the group of Prof. Petra Knaus at Freie Universität Berlin in 2019. During his PhD, his research centered around mechanotransduction and mechanically induced genetic changes in the vascular system with a focus on BMP/ TGFβ signaling. In 2023, he defended his dissertation earning the highest honors Summa cum Laude.

He continued working at Freie Universität Berlin as a post-doc and joined the lab pf Dr. Leif Ludwig at MDC/ BIH Berlin as a visiting researcher. There, he acquired knowledge on human lineage tracing using single-cell sequencing.

In his role as a CARIM Postdoctoral Research Fellow, which he started in November 2024 in the group of Prof. Judith Sluimer, he will apply this knowledge on vascular ageing.

Paul’s research focuses on vascular rejuvenation. He is interested in how cells expand clonally in vascular disease and ageing and how cellular lineages can be tracked. He uses advanced single-cell sequencing methods to understand these complex cellular processes. Moreover, Paul wants to assess if vascular rejuvenation can be achieved by modifying the mechanical environment of vascular cells.
